Accessibility
Every reader should be able to find the books, read the dispatches and join the Lantern Club, however they use the web.
This site aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. It doesn't fully meet them yet. What's in place, and what isn't, is set out below.
Pausing animations
The site uses drifting smoke, sparkles and moving backgrounds. To stop them, use Pause animations at the foot of any page, or press Tab once or twice when a page opens. Videos then show a still picture and animations stop. On the homepage, scenes fade from one to the next as you scroll instead of sliding, spinning or zooming. The choice is remembered on this device until you change it.
If your device is set to reduce motion, the site starts paused on its own.
What's in place
- Every page can be used with a keyboard, and the item you're on is clearly outlined.
- A Skip to content link, the first stop when you press Tab, jumps past the menu.
- Book samples and book details open in panels that hold keyboard focus, close with Escape, and return you to where you were.
- Images that carry meaning have text descriptions. Decorative ones are hidden from screen readers.
- Pages can be zoomed to 200% and text resized without losing anything.
- The Lantern Club register's page-turning book is decorative. Screen readers read the same names as a plain list.
What isn't there yet
- Some small captions are set in faint, decorative type. If any are hard to read, please say which.
- The site was checked with a keyboard and automated tools in October 2026, but hasn't yet been tested by people who use screen readers.
