Privacy

The short version: this site has no ads, sets no tracking cookies, and never sells or shares your information. The only personal detail it keeps is the email address you give the Lantern Club, and you can take that back at any time.

Counting visits

Visits are counted with GoatCounter, a privacy-friendly service based in the EU. It records which page was viewed, the site you came from, your browser type, screen size and country. It uses no cookies, doesn't store your IP address, and can't follow you across visits or to other sites.

The Lantern Club newsletter

When you sign up, or claim a free novel through BookFunnel, your email address (and your name, if you give it) goes to MailerLite, the EU-based service that sends the newsletter. You'll get an email asking you to confirm before anything else is sent. MailerLite also records the date you joined, where you signed up, and whether newsletters are opened or their links clicked.

Every email has an unsubscribe link. Using it stops all newsletters at once.

Books you've read, your shelf and your card

When you report a book you've finished, the address you enter is used to look you up in MailerLite and note which books you've read. That's how reader ranks work. If you aren't on the list yet, you're only added when you tick the box asking to join.

Your shelf is reached by a private link with a long random key, sent only to your inbox. To keep it quick, the shelf page keeps a copy of your name, rank and books on this site's server for ten minutes. Fellows' membership cards show the name you asked to have printed on them.

The Lantern Club register shows Fellows' names only with their permission, written the way each reader asked. The page is hidden from search engines.

What's stored in your browser

This site sets no cookies. It keeps these small notes in your browser:

• Your shelf link, saved when you open your shelf, so the Lantern Club page can offer to take you back to it. Clearing your browser's site data removes it.
• Whether you've already seen the homepage introduction during this visit, so it doesn't replay every time you return to the homepage. It disappears when you close the tab.
• Your animation setting, if you use Pause animations or Play animations, so the choice holds on every page.
• A MailerLite form ID, only if you start filling in the homepage signup form. MailerLite's form saves it and sends it with your signup.

Only the last one is ever sent anywhere.

The hosting server

Like every website, this one runs on a server (HostGator's) that keeps routine logs of requests, including IP addresses, for security and to fix problems. The logs aren't used to identify or track anyone.

Other sites

Links to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo, BookFunnel and the book shop take you to sites with their own privacy policies. Store links on this site aren't affiliate links.

Your choices

Wherever you live, you can ask to see what's held about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted, and you'll get an answer within 30 days. Write to about@eburneanbooks.com. Readers in the EU and UK can also complain to their local data protection authority.

Nothing here is meant for children under 13, and their information isn't knowingly collected.

If this policy changes, the date at the top will change with it.
